IMHO

Hello everybody!

I’m glad to make my tiny little contribution to the development of this English club. Let it be my humble opinion concerning the subject.

The idea itself sounds good. The realization seems a bit obscure. I think it’s OK, many good projects and plans took shape in process. Therefore, I’d like to catch an opportunity and express my vision.

Goals & objectives are perfectly clear – you can read them on the top of the page, in the newly made brief description :)

Means & methods are implied in the interactive nature of our beloved web-site. So, we’re going to improve our “speaking” English while chatting on-line. And would have a chance to learn more about vocabulary, grammar, phonetics etc. taking into account other people's comments and corrections or discussing diverse “language problems”.

So, there may be at least 3 types of topics to create.

1. Topic-question. You’re puzzled over any linguistic problem and need advice.

2. Topic-quiz. Have an interesting quiz? Share it!

3. Topic, as it is. A story, raising interest and provoking reaction, i.e. comments.

Thinking of the third type I get a bit puzzled.

Let’s chat. But… About what?!

That’s the core — to choose the right theme. What does it mean – right? Firstly, interesting for the majority of users. Secondly, useful for them. In order to find at least some proper themes — not just pending on the club page but flourishing with comments – maybe we should speak about our motives. I mean, answer the question “Why do I want to speak fluent English?”. You communicate with foreigners at work? You want to make new acquaintances while travelling? You want to flirt on Mamba?..

Don’t laugh! I have a friend of mine – she started learning English exactly for that purpose! That’s how we met – I helped her to translate letters from abroad – and write answers to her admirers :)

One more possible purpose of joining the club like this — you’re satisfied with your English, you don’t need it much in your everyday life, you don’t want to improve… you just don’t want to forget. Frankly speaking, that’s my case. English for me is not a matter of necessity or interest. It’s a matter of clear conscience.

Whatever reasons pushed you into the vast expanses of the English-speaking world, I may assure you: that won’t be in vain. Nevertheless I skip working as an interpreter or translator, try to avoid all companies except for speaking perfectly clear Russian, I appreciate my English. It’s a comfort to understand what's written on any tube and jar of cosmetics or food stuff. It's a delight to read a book that haven't yet been translated into Russian. It's a challenge to speak philosophy before saying «no» to a nice foreigner who wants to invite you to dinner… All that sounds a bit silly, but I just want to say, that proficiency in the international language obviously gives lots of advantages. I estimate your will to join millions of cosmopolites. And wish you good luck!

At last (if you happen to read all my boring text to this point, congratulations!), I suggest that everyone enumerates themes for topics he or she thinks interesting & useful. Thanks for your attention!

Thank you, Elegance, for starting a conversation.
I would be very grateful if you can correct my speak (write) mistakes. Long time, no speak, you know)))

Long time, no speak, you know
As for me — just the same situation ;) Besides, my speaking skills were always awful (the notorious «language barrier»). Writing — that's better! Language — like driving a car — once you learn, you'll hardly ever forget. That's a pleasure for me to be of help :)

If I see something horrible — of course, I'll point out for you. But I made lots of mistakes too! ;)

Thanks a lot for a good example of proper English here.
I also want to make some topics here (not as good as this one of course), but have no time to implement my ideas yet.
Could you explain, what is “It’s a matter of clear conscience”
It’s not very clear for me, can you say it in other words?

Thanks for appreciation!

“It’s a matter of clear conscience”
Of course, I'll try to give a definition. Clear conscience — that's how I feel when I meet my requirements to a good person. And don't feel guilty. Brr — that sounds even more complicated, sorry! ;)

The sentence from the club description:
This club is designed for English-speaking users. If you want to improve your communication skills, have some precious practice or discuss the language itself — welcome on board :)
Is it right to say “precious practice”? Maybe better say “previous practice”?

precious
That means valuable, useful, in other words, something that you need very much. So, I've chosen the word intentionally.

Sounds good in this content, I have to confess that I've got to pick up the meaning of the word 'enumerates' from my dictionary.
But this is great to learn new expressions. It’s one of the points we are here.
Concerning the themes for topics I would offer to talk about travelling (good pictures can be very suitable here). I’m interested in 4WD cars and motobikes (could be not very interesting for ladies :)).
I also want to say a few words about our spoken English club I’ve mentioned before. I’ll make a new topic for that.

4WD cars
That's my baby ;)

I’ll make a new topic for that.
Sounds interesting, will read as soon as spare time occures :)
